PHYSICAL FACILITIES AND
SERVICES
STUDENTS ACCOMMODATION:
The Institute has always been concerned
with the problem of students' accommodation although it
has no obligation to provide the same.
Over
the years, the Institute has tried to increase hostel accommodation
for Students in order to meet the ever-increasing demand
for these facilities. Overall, the Institute has a capacity
of housing 684 students against the student population of
just above 2,400.
The hostel accommodation is inadequate
to meet the ever-increasing demand for housing. Nowadays,
most students prefer on-campus hostel accommodation rather
than living off-campus in order to take advantage of conducive
studying atmosphere enjoy, the security provided at IFM
and avoid problems associated with transport and intermittent
power interruptions.
To ease the problem of scarcity of accommodation at IFM,
the Institute has rented a few privately run hostels in
various areas in Dar es Salaam such as Ilala, Mwananyamala
and Manzese Argentina.
Students who need to stay either on-campus
or off-campus hostels are required to apply well in advance
before the start of the academic year. Before being given
accommodation students are required to pay annual hostel
fees as indicated on the fees structure. However, it should
be noted that off campus hostel fees are slightly higher
compared to on-campus.
COMPUTER CENTRE:
The Institute has 5 Computer laboratories
that have been networked. These have a total of 262 networked
computers. Personal Computers, 8 servers and 21 network
printers for more than 2,500 users. The Institute is planning
to construct 4 new computer workshops with the capacity
of 80 students and add more PCs. This will increase students'
access to the computer facilities. In the next five years
the Institute has planned to have a computer facility network
to link key user areas of student's admission and records,
course management, staff administration, library and teaching
laboratories.
CATERING SERVICES:
The Institute does not provide meals. It
used to provide meals to both workers and students until
July 1992. In 1995, cafeteria services were privatized.
After commercializing cafeteria services, meals are now
sold to any member of the IFM community and outsiders in
the recently built outdoor cafeteria along the Ohio Street.
The cafeteria provides catering services at affordable prices
to about 250 staff and students at a time. There are also
several restaurants and hotels close to the Institute which
sell food at reasonable prices.
LIBRARY SERVICES:
The activities of IFML are geared towards
supporting the teaching and research activities of the Institute
trough the provision of textbooks, periodicals, newspapers
and other reading materials to lecturers, administrative
staff, students and other needy members of the public such
as researchers, government and non-government officials,
etc.
It is located on the seconf and third floors of Block A.
